| Cosmetic Dentistry - Teeth Whitening
If you have stained or discoloured teeth or just feel that your teeth are dark in colour, it may be possible to improve the appearance by using a tooth whitening technique.
The advantage of tooth whitening compared to dental veneers and crowns is that no drilling is involved therefore no damage is caused to the tooth surface.
The two most common systems are Home bleaching and Power bleaching. At Park Road Dental we use the Home bleaching system as it causes less sensitivity and the colour improvement is longer lasting and more stable.
The home bleaching method involves three appointments. At the first, impressions are taken of your teeth. From these impressions specially designed trays are constructed and tried in at the second appointment. You are then given a kit containing the trays, a supply of whitening gel and instructions on how to use them. Finally, the shade of your teeth prior to treatment is recorded in your notes. Over the following two weeks you apply the gel to your teeth by placing it in the trays and wearing them in the evenings for a period of three to four hours. At the third appointment the tooth shade is recorded again to measure the improvement in appearance. Sometimes a further period of whitening is required to get the desired effect. Some people may get sensitivity when the trays have been in their mouths for a period of time. To overcome this we can provide a desensitizing paste to alleviate the problem.
It is essential that a full dental examination is carried out prior to carrying out any form of tooth whitening as the procedures could cause severe pain if done in the presence of any form of dental disease.
